How to Wash a Cotton Blanket So It Lasts for Decades

A good cotton blanket should get better with age, softer, cozier, more yours. But we've all had the other kind: the one that comes out of the wash a little worse every time until one day it's less blanket and more large stiff cracker. That's almost never the cotton's fault. It's usually a washing problem, and it's an easy one to get right.

So here's exactly how we care for ours, and how you can keep yours soft for a very long time.

Cold water, gentle cycle, and go easy

Hot water is the thing that shrinks and stresses cotton fibers, so keep it cold or barely warm and run the gentle cycle. Use a mild detergent, and don't drown the machine in it. Give the blanket room to move, too. If it's packed in there like a Saturday morning at the farmers market, it can't actually get clean, and all that friction is what roughs up the weave over time.

One thing we'd skip: fabric softener. It sounds backwards, but softener leaves a waxy film that builds up wash after wash and actually makes cotton less soft and less breathable. If you want a little extra softness, a half cup of white vinegar in the rinse does the job without the buildup. Your blanket will not smell like a salad. Promise.

Low heat is everything in the dryer

This is where most blankets meet their crunchy end. High heat is the culprit behind both shrinking and stiffening, so tumble on the lowest setting. Better still, pull it out while it's still a touch damp and let it finish over a drying rack or the back of a chair. A couple of dryer balls (or clean tennis balls, we won't tell) help keep everything fluffed while it dries.

A little storage sense

Once it's fully dry, keep it somewhere cool and dry. Skip the plastic bin or bag, which traps moisture and invites mildew. A shelf, a basket, the foot of the bed where the dog has clearly already claimed it. All fine.

What to do if it already feels stiff

If you're reading this a few washes too late and your blanket already feels rough, don't panic. Run it through a cold wash with that half cup of white vinegar (no detergent this time), then tumble low with dryer balls. The vinegar strips out old detergent and softener residue, and a lot of the softness comes right back. Sometimes it takes two rounds. Cotton is forgiving that way.
